African Tree Basil
Ocimum gratissimum, commonly called African basil or clove basil, is an erect aromatic shrub in the mint family that can grow 50 to 300 cm tall with opposite, ovate green leaves and small pale flowers. It thrives in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and elsewhere. In traditional African herbal practice, it has been used as a botanical to support natural body responses, especially where antioxidant and antimicrobial properties are valued. Phytochemical studies identify flavonoids, phenolic acids, and essential oils such as eugenol, which are associated with antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory activities. Traditional practitioners value this herb for mild relief of discomfort and support for general balance and natural defence mechanisms.
